A Mental Health Experiment
This was the beginning of everything.
During the event, there was a young man named Luke. I had just met him a little bit before we sent him an invite to this experience. Luke went up on stage and opened up about the passing of his little brother - suicide. Twenty-four days later - I had a meeting on my calendar to get coffee with Luke. That same day my eighteen year old brother committed suicide. I didn’t make it to the coffee meeting.
Everything changed for me that day. Everything.
It Started with a bunch of Misfits
What’s crazy about all of this is that this event was done in 2019, so I’m writing this years later (in 2022). At the time, I was an agency founder. We had a team of around eight at the time. Looking back at that time of my life I barely recognize myself. I was so young, naive, and made so many mistakes.
But I think that was a part of why everything worked (even when it shouldn’t have). We had a wicked talented team and we were kind of oblivious as to what really went into what we wanted to achieve. We took it one day at a time and wrote the playbook as we “played".”
Shortly after that event, we had our best month in business. I had lost my brother and decided to bury myself in my work. Then Covid happened. Months later we decided to close our doors. I miss the team. I miss the moments and what we were able to create together. But I’m forever grateful for what I learned as a misfit.
Creating the Event
We put the event together in a few days (hah)! Long story short we made a list of about 50 people that we thought would be a great fit for a mental health event. We dwindled that list down to 30. From there each of us took ownership of a lane. I focused on the experience and what we wanted it to feel like for those that would attend.
Each of the 30 members got a text from Izzy (one of my old business partners) or from me. We asked them if they were interested in participating in an event. If yes, we sent them another text with the location and time. All they knew was that it was going to be centered around mental health. Other than that they had no idea what they were getting into.
If you want to see what it looked like putting it together, I found a making-of video on my YouTube channel (I watched it for the first time a few days ago 😅).
